Original maps are bonded to a stretched canvas support before numerous thin layers of acrylic paint are applied.
There is a constant battle to balance transparency, which will retain legibility of original calligraphy, against an evolving mixture of textures, with varying degrees of luminosity, from the colours applied.
As the work proceeds, there is re-evaluation of features, the direction and grain of route ways, areas of interest, clusters of habitation and their interaction.
The task is to divine a new meaning from these outdated maps.
They record memories of a time past: as enigmatic as a footprint in the sand or a dinosaur fossil in this Google-map Age
